Good News: Relationship Anxiety Is Normal

Good News: Relationship Anxiety Is Normal

Good News: Relationship Anxiety Is Normal

Whether youre in a long-term committed relationship or fresh off a swiping session on Tinder, relationship anxiety can and likely will pop up at some point.
Whether it stems from lack of trust, fear of abandonment, questioning your compatibility or worrying about non-reciprocated feelings, most people experience some form of unease about the future of their partnership. The real issue arises when natural worry evolves into debilitating stress or results in self-sabotage that negatively affects your relationship.
Accepting that some anxiety is completely normal is the first step to keeping it at a manageable level.
When you begin to feel it spiral out of control and have ripple affects that begin to hurt your relationship and your own mental health heres what you need to know about identifying the source and getting it under control.

SIGNS YOUR RELATIONSHIP ANXIETY HAS REACHED AN UNHEALTHY LEVEL

It is important to note that everyone has some relationship anxiety, and thats to be expected, reiterated Dr. Amanda Zayde, a clinical psychologist at the Montefiore Medical Center. However, if you find yourself hypervigilant for clues that something is wrong, or if you experience frequent distress that impacts your daily life, please, take some time to address it. Everyone deserves to feel secure and connected in their relationships.
Some clear signs that youre toeing the line or have sprinted beyond it include consistent emotional instability, impaired judgement, impaired impulse control, difficulty focusing and paying attention to daily tasks, feeling lovesick and sad, and a decrease in motivation, loneliness and fatigue, says Dr. Danielle Forshee, a psychologist who specializes in relational and marital issues.
This ongoing state of mind is not only mentally exhausting and detrimental to your own wellbeing, but can ultimately lead to relationship disintegration.
Relationship anxiety can cause people to engage in behaviors that end up pushing their partner away, says Dr. Zayde. For example, calling 20 times in a row, jumping to conclusions or becoming emotionally distant. It can also cause a tremendous amount of distress and distraction, as people spend hours trying to decode their partners behavior.

Thousands flee as wildfires ravage northern California; 11 killed

At least 11 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured on Monday as massive wildfires swept through parts of California, destroying 1,500 residences and buildings, authorities said.
Firefighters were battling 17 fires across multiple counties around the state as of late Monday night, authorities said. Intensified by strong winds, the fires charred about 90,000 acres of land, destroyed at least 1,500 buildings and forced nearly 20,000 residents to evacuate.
St. Joseph Health said about 170 patients have been treated, many for burns and smoke inhalation, at three of its hospitals, including two in Sonoma County, where at least seven people died of fire-related injuries. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said the number of fatalities could increase. Authorities have received more than 100 phone calls to report on people who were purportedly missing, according to one Sonoma County official.
Officials with the California Highway Patrol described one of the dead as an elderly woman who was blind and hard of hearing, according to ABC's San Francisco station KGO. The woman was found dead in the driveway of her home in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, according to the officials, who suspected that she may have been trying to escape the flames when she she died.
Details on the other victims have not been released yet.
Two of the largest blazes, dubbed the Tubbs and Atlas Fires by authorities, burned a combined 52,000 acres of land in Sonoma and Napa counties.
In Anaheim, 1,000 firefighters were mobilized to fight a blaze that burned an estimated 6,000 acres and destroyed at least 24 homes and businesses. At least 3,000 residents were evacuated in and around Anaheim and more than 5,000 structures were threatened by the flames.

Dancing with the Stars' celebs share their most memorable years

Dancing with the Stars' celebs share their most memorable years

Dancing with the Stars' celebs share their most memorable years

This week was the "Dancing with the Stars" traditional stroll down memory lane, as the celebrities shared their "most memorable year."

The idea behind this emotion-packed show is to celebrate, through dance, a time in each of their lives that left a lasting impression.

Have the tissues ready, dance fans; these stories and performances have a direct route from the heart to the tear ducts!

Here's a rundown of the night's routines, from highest score to lowest:

Jordan Fisher: 29 out of 30
That's right we have the first 10 of the season... and there were two of them! Jordan's contemporary routine celebrated the love he feels for his grandparents, who were like his parents. They raised him since he was born, and officially adopted him in 2005. Jordan says their selflessness saved his life, and what could have been a tough life wasn't because he always felt loved. BIG hug and BIG tears with Mom and Dad who are in the audience for the performance this week. Head judge Len Goodman called the dance simply fantastic; Bruno Tonioli thought it was flawless, open hearted, and a work of art; Carrie Ann Inaba felt the duo brought pure love and gratitude to the dance floor.

Victoria Arlen: 27 out of 30
Victoria's memorable year is right now, 2017, because not only can she walk again, she can dance! She remembers doctors saying she'd never recover from her neurological issues. But she's a fighter and wanted her story to end on her terms. In 2010 she started getting some feeling back in her hands; then her speech returned. And she defied every doctor and expert who said she would never be out of her wheelchair. Val choreographed a foxtrot to mirror her journey, from wheelchair to the ballroom. All three judges gave her a 9, and said they were inspired by her journey and strength of character.

Lindsey Stirling: 26 out of 30
Lindsey was very close to her late father and she chose the year he passed away from cancer as her most memorable year. Not because it's sad (although it is) but because the experience taught her to celebrate the time she did have with him rather than dwell on what she was losing. Her dad always wore a hat and a scarf, and for the routine, Mark wore them in tribute. Through tears, Carrie Ann thanked Lindsey for being a unique artist and for dancing this wonderful tribute; Bruno called it a gorgeous and magical dance, almost dream-like, with Lindsey dancing with her soul.

Nikki Bella: 24 out of 30
Nikki's memorable year was 2016, the year she made her comeback into the wrestling ring following a serious neck injury. After an MRI showed she was dangerously close to becoming paralyzed, Nikki spent time in the hospital taking care of herself, but all the while feared she may never wrestle professionally again. She fought back and trained hard and seven months later, Fearless Nikki was back. Artem choreographed a beautiful contemporary routine to the tune "Fight Song". Carrie Ann called the dance a breakthrough, and praised Nikki for connecting her heart, body and emotions into a perfect blend of artistry and power.

Vanessa Lachey: 24 out of 30
Vanessa lets us know her family is her proudest achievement in life. She did not have an easy upbringing so it has always been important to Vanessa to have a close family. She had easy pregnancies with her first two children. She and husband Nick didn't expect anything to go wrong with the third. But little Phoenix Robert Lachey was born at 29 weeks and was in an incubator for a while. Both parents said they never felt so helpless. But Phoenix is a tough little guy, and he is now a healthy happy almost-10-month-old.

Frankie Muniz: 24 out of 30
Frankie hit a bit of a rough patch last week with the samba and the fact that his body just can't quite make those Latin moves. He was back with a ballroom dance this week, the quickstep, and you could sense the joy. Frankie's most memorable year is this one. Right here. Right now. He's very focused on living in the present and says he has never been happier. Part of his decision to live his best life right now is because he has problems with his memory. Frankie's had nine concussions, and several TIA's. He's not sure if that's what causes his memory issues, but he's chosen not to wallow in any of the drama and clearly it's working for him. Len thought the dance was light and filled with content; Bruno was happy to see the spring in his step return and told him to keep it up!

Terrell Owens: 24 out of 30
Terrell danced in tribute to his late grandmother this week. His memorable "years" were really all the time he was able to spend with her. She raised him and was clearly the driving force in his life. Grandma was diagnosed with dementia in 1996, Terrell's rookie year in pro football. He said she was his inspiration and motivation and gave him the best advice: you don't have to be perfect, you just have to be there! Terrell and Cheryl's Viennese waltz is his best dance yet, and Terrell bursts into tears at the end of the routine to Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing". Bruno told Terrell he looked elegant, smart, and showed great poise; Carrie Ann praised him for continuing to "show up" and keep trying, and this week he elevated his performance to a new level.

Sasha Pieterse: 24 out of 30
Sasha's most memorable year is 2016. It's the year her long-running show "Pretty Little Liars" ended; it's also the year she got engaged. Sasha was feeling about endings and beginnings, and wanted to dance about ending one chapter, starting a new one, and knowing there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It was yet another round of 8's from the judges, with all three praising her ballroom skills and the lovely quality she brings to the ballroom.

Drew Scott: 24 out of 30
Drew went back 10 years for his most memorable. In 2007, he decided it was time to really go after the biggest dream in his heart: he wanted to be an actor. Drew left his successful real estate career to pursue acting. He did not succeed, but he learned a valuable lesson. If your dreams are crushed, find a new dream! He had the idea to combine his love for television with his real estate business (and brother Jonathan's contractor skills) and "Property Brothers" was born. He and Emma's dance is a jive that is nothing but energy and joy. And the best part: Jonathan joins them on the dance floor for the last bit of the routine. The judges loved it.

Derek Fisher: 23 out of 30
Derek and his family went through a very dark time in 2007 when they learned his then-10-month-old daughter had a rare form of eye cancer. During the time of her treatment, Fish realized his basketball career didn't mean as much as his family, so he walked away from a multimillion dollar contract to take care of his little girl. She is doing great now, and he wants to celebrate having her in his life. Sharna choreographs a jazz routine that was uplifting to everyone, including the judges.

Nick Lachey: 22 out of 30
Nick celebrates 2011, his wedding year, as his most memorable. He said for as long as he can remember, he wanted to be married and have a family. He revealed his bond with Vanessa was instant, and he knew he had met his soul mate. Peta choreographed a touching contemporary routine that Carrie Ann thought was his best dance yet; Len called the dance poignant, touching and sensitive; and Bruno applauded Nick for showing the intensity of his feelings.

SPOILER ALERT
The elimination at the end of the show came mercifully quickly. Nick Lachey and Derek Fisher were the two celebrities in jeopardy. In the end, it was Derek's turn to leave the dance floor.

This week was the Dancing with the Stars traditional stroll down memory lane, as the celebrities shared their most memorable year.

Pence's flights to and from Indianapolis Colts game that he left in protest cost nearly $250,000

Pence's flights to and from Indianapolis Colts game that he left in protest cost nearly $250,000

Pence's flights to and from Indianapolis Colts game that he left in protest cost nearly $250,000

The trip that Vice President Mike Pence took this weekend to see the Indianapolis Colts play in his home state -- which he later left in protest after players did not stand for the national anthem -- cost taxpayers nearly $250,000, according to an ABC News estimate.

Pence's costly trip comes as a number of Trump administration officials have come under scrutiny in recent weeks over the cost of their travel on private and military planes.

Pence traveled from Las Vegas to his home state Sunday to watch the Indianapolis Colts play the San Francisco 49ers. At least 20 members of the 49ers -- the team that started the anthem protests -- knelt during the anthem, leading to the vice president's departure.

"I left today's Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem," said Pence in a statement afterward.

How 5 top Trump administration officials have drawn scrutiny for their travel
The vice president traveled to Indiana's capital in an Air Force C-32 that costs $30,290 per hour to operate. Flying from Las Vegas, where he was visiting those affected by last week's mass shooting, the trip took approximately three-and-a-half hours, totaling $106,015.

After leaving the game, Pence left for Los Angeles, a four-and-a-half-hour flight that cost $136,305, bringing the total for the two legs of the trip to $242,320. The vice president's office told ABC News it expects some of that cost will be reimbursed through political funds because he attended a political fundraising event in Los Angeles. The office did not specify how much would be reimbursed.

Had Pence skipped the trip to Indianapolis and flown straight to Los Angeles from Las Vegas -- a 1 hour, 15-minute flight -- the expense would have been $37,862.50.

An official with the vice president's office argued that despite the brevity of Pence's stay in Indianapolis, the journey Sunday was actually cheaper than it would have been otherwise as it was never the intention to travel straight to Los Angeles.

"If the vice president did not go to Indiana for the Colts game, he would have flown back to D.C. for the evening -- which meant flying directly over Indiana," said the official. "Instead, he made a shorter trip to Indiana for a game that was on his schedule for several weeks."

The attention on Pence's travel costs comes just over a week after Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price resigned in the wake of revelations that he broke precedent by repeatedly utilizing charter and military aircraft for his government travel during his cabinet tenure.

Several other administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and EPA Administrator Steve Pruitt, are the subject of inquiries by their departments' inspectors general over their travel aboard private or government aircraft.

Female sports journalists react to Cam Newton, share their own sexist experiences

Female sports journalists react to Cam Newton, share their own sexist experiences

The hurdles they continue to face were brought into the spotlight this week after an interaction between Cam Newton and a female reporter.

During a press conference Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers quarterback laughed at a question posed by Jourdan Rodrigue. The Charlotte Observer sportswriter's question was a valid one -- she asked about the team's routes, which caused Newton to reply: "It's funny to hear a female talk about routes."

ESPN W contributor Shana Renee Stephenson told ABC News that what Rodrigue experienced was not unusual.

"If you talk to any woman beat writer, Im sure they have stories for days about a similar interaction whether it be with an athlete or a team executive or something," she said "Theyre a woman in a male-dominated industry."

But not only female sports reporters were offended, ESPN reporter Michele Steele said. "Some of my male colleagues ... thought this was offensive," she noted.

"If you watch the video," Steele went onto explain, "he paused for a laugh and I didnt hear anybody laughing. This was something pretty universally condemned on my side."

How to dab Like Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton
Cam Newton has long had a prickly relationship with the media

It's not the first time the franchise quarterback has ruffled feathers at a sports press conference or even on the field.

From growing weary at responding to reporters' questions in the days leading up to the Super Bowl last year, to being oddly criticized for dabbing, Newton has seemingly grown accustomed to the attention.

"Cam Newton is an interesting person," Jane McManus, who's been a sportswriter for 17 years, told ABC News. "He is often genuine where other professional athletes can be very scripted. Thats a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you want to get authenticity ... but sometimes it can betray something that is less appealing."

She added that Newton's "offhand" comments "reflect a lack of awareness of women in this business and what they deal with -- and that attitude is part of what they deal with."

It's definitely not a comment that a franchise player should make -- one who's undergone media training, Stephenson said.

"Cams been in the league for seven seasons now. He's a former MVP. Hes been the face of the franchise ... since his rookie season as a franchise quarterback so he should know whats appropriate to say and whats not appropriate to say," she added.

"Cam Newton is someone who has said he wants to be a superstar in this league," Steele, who's been a sports reporter since 2009 and has covered the NFL since 2011, noted. "This was supposed to be a big comeback year for him after the 2016 season and this certainly is not superstar behavior."

Lack of diversity feeds the problem

Many female sports journalists point out that they are often the only, or one of few, women in the locker room. Their scarcity could lead to bias -- conscious or unconscious, blatant or subtle, some said.

"Because there a so few of us, especially in smaller markets, every woman has to re-blaze that trail," McManus, who spent years covering the New York Jets, said.

She added, "There is more acceptance. The laws are such that women are able to go everywhere ... Equal access, thats fairly unquestioned. Occasionally you'll get a rogue security guard who thinks women dont belong in locker rooms."

Stephenson, who also created AllSportsEverything.com, recalls a time when she faced similar challenges while applying for a sports reporter position, which she ultimately did not get.

"They were concerned about me being a woman in the locker room," she said. "That was often a question that was raised in the interview process about my comfortability level as a woman reporting for a professional male team and being the only woman or being one of few."

Stephenson added, "I would always say it wasnt an issue for me because I felt more than qualified for the job that I was interviewing for and that I had a job to do and so I would be prepared and comfortable."

Still, Steele said she wants to "underline" that not all male athletes in locker rooms exhibit sexist behaviors.

"The vast majority of guys in locker rooms have been so respectful of me as a reporter and me as a woman," she said.

It's why Steele dismisses stereotypes about "locker room talk," a term recently dragged back into the zeitgeist after then-presidential candidate Donald Trump was caught on tape having a vulgar exchange with TV host Billy Bush.

Trump dismissed and downplayed the comments as "locker room banter."

"What I told people at the time was, 'Go to a locker room. The average age of athletes is somewhere in the 20s. These are guys who are used to women speaking up for themselves,'" she said. "They're more PC than the average office."
