Americans duped by surrogacy clinic

Americans duped by surrogacy clinic

New Delhi: Their dream of having a child through surrogacy was fulfilled in February, 2013, so American national Morgan Newton and his partner did not think twice before returning to India to have another one in 2014.

However, Newton got the shock of his life when he found out that the twins given to him were genetically not his children. This is when the gay couple realised that they had been cheated by the surrogacy clinic that charged them Rs 27 lakh for their bundle of joy.

What is worrying is that Newton is not the only one who has allegedly been cheated by Surrogacy Centre India and ISIS hospital IVF and multi-speciality centreboth clinics located in South Delhi's Kailash Colony. Another US citizen Adam Berman also faced a similar situation at the clinic as the child handed over to him was not genetically his.

After both Newton and Berman approached a trial court, the judge observed that prima facie charge of cheating is made out and directed Delhi Police to lodge an FIR against the clinic, its owners Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour, Dr Vishal Dutt Gour and others, including some doctors. Metropolitan Magistrate Sheetal Chaudhary Pradhan in a recent order directed the SHO of Greater Kailash-I police station to investigate the case thoroughly and file the compliance report in the court within one month.

Both the complainants alleged that the clinic's owners and some doctors are running a well-organised racket to "induce" prospective parents to avail their services and, thereafter, they are cheating, misappropriating and even extorting money. The complainants told the court that the respondents did not just cause monetary damage to them but also played with their emotions.
Newton's complaint states that the accused "may also be involved in misusing sperms of foreign nationals without consent, for unknown motives."

Berman has levelled even more serious allegations claiming that the respondents are "forcing" young and poor girls to become surrogate mothers in the garb of "concocted promises" of monetary compensation. He also alleged that the respondents are playing with the future of innocent babies born out of surrogacy by "threatening" clients like him of giving babies to orphanages.
